WELL–RESERVOIR COUPLING IN AN OPENFOAM–BASED SOLVER

This work presents a single-phase well–reservoir coupling strategy implemented in an OpenFOAM-based simulator called upstreamFoam. Reservoir flow is modeled with Darcy’s law, while wellbore flow is described by a one-dimensional momentum equation along the well trajectory. The formulation supports multiple friction correlations; here the friction term is evaluated using the Swamee correlation, and a frictionless case is also considered for comparison with analytical solutions. Coupling between reservoir and well uses the classical Peaceman model. Verification cases include transient radial flow with a vertical well, one-dimensional pipe flow, and a three-dimensional coupled well–reservoir simulation.
