Carbon dots (CDs) are carbon nanoparticles that exhibit luminescent, biocompatible, and easily obtainable properties. They are widely used as cellular markers in bioimaging as well as in the sensing of different analytes[1]. Considering that many secondary and primary amines react with nitric oxide (NO0) to generate products known as diazeniumdiolate ions[2], the objective is obtain fluorescent CDs based on carbonaceous precursors citric acid:ethylenediamine and evaluate their use in sensing reactive nitrogen species (RNOs) such as NO2 and/or NO0 through fluorescence quenching.
