Novel blue luminescent materials based on layered double hydroxides doped with gadolinium ions containing polycarboxylate anions.

Abstract

This study investigated the luminescent properties of Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) doped with gadolinium ions (Gd³⁺) at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%, and intercalated with the BTC anion (1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate). Synthesized via automated coprecipitation with pH control, the materials' typical LDH structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Gd³⁺ incorporation affected crystallinity and expanded the basal spacing from 13.34 Å to 14.43 Å, demonstrating the successful intercalation of the BTC anion. Upon excitation at 300 nm, all samples exhibited intense, long-lasting blue emission (390–480 nm), attributed to the phosphorescence of the BTC anion, which acts as the primary photoactive center. CIE 1931 diagram coordinates confirmed an emission profile in the blue-violet region. These results position the materials as promising candidates for light-emitting devices and novel photonic systems.
