Abstract

The chemical fixation of CO2 into epoxides represents a crucial strategy for carbon capture and utilization, transforming a greenhouse gas into high-value cyclic carbonates. This study investigates the catalytic conversion of styrene oxide into styrene carbonate using manganese(III) porphyrins as homogeneous catalysts. The reaction was performed under mild conditions (23 or 40 °C, 1 bar CO2), utilizing tetrabutylammonium bromide as a co-catalyst. The system demonstrated high efficiency and selectivity, promoted by the metal center's ability to activate the epoxide ring for CO2 insertion. The results highlight the potential of manganese porphyrins as robust, biomimetic platforms for the synthesis of fine chemicals from CO2. This approach offers a sustainable pathway for carbon valorization, aligning with the principles of green chemistry and the development of efficient catalytic processes for environmental remediation.
