Abstract

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of an enantiomeric pair of water-soluble mononuclear FeII complexes: [FeII(S-Naf)2 ]2+ and [FeII(R-Naf)2 ]2+. The chiral R-Naf and S-Naf ligands provide spatially oriented aromatic surfaces to evaluate enantioselective interactions with DNA. Phenanthroline and imine fragments allow localized metal to ligand charge transfers upon irradiation in the therapeutic window. DNA-binding and photonuclease studies under irradiation at 530 and 655 nm support the potential of FeII complexes as PDT agents operating via Type I mechanism.
