Circularly Polarized Light Emission from Seven-Coordinate Tb3+ Complexes in the Solid State and Polymer Films

Abstract

In the present work, the two chiral proligands and the [Tb(S-bbppn)Cl] and [Tb(R-bbppn)Cl] complexes were synthesized. The enantiopure compounds crystallize in a different space group compared to the racemic mixture, are more soluble in organic solvents, and form highly transparent, homogeneous thin films with polymers such as poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA. These films are photostable under continuous UV radiation for more than 30 hours. Preliminary measurements in KBr pellets confirmed the presence of CPL emission in the solid state, and film preparation with different polymers and complex:matrix proportions is underway to optimize the determination of dissymmetry factors (glum).
