Mössbauer effect (nuclear gamma resonance spectroscopy) is best known and most commonly applied to iron complexes (57Fe is the active nucleus). But many other elements (isotopes) can be studied by this powerful technique, such as 187Os and 193Ir. In the present case, studies were performed on a variety of osmium and iridium coordination complexes, some of which are medicinally relevant as potential anti-cancer drugs. Information on the correlation of their Mössbauer parameters with complex geometry and oxidation state was obtained. Computational studies to obtain a deeper understanding of the spectroscopic results will also be described.
