Diclidanthera laurifolia Mart. (Polygalaceae) (Which includes as synonym, D. elliptica Miers), is popularly known as jaboticaba-de-cipó or jaboticaba de rama, being distributed in the Atlantic Forest from BA (at northeast region) to southeast region’ states (ES, MG, RJ, SP) of Brazil. Its fruits are often consumed by local people.1 As far as we know, there is no report about the chemical composition or biological activity of D. laurifolia extracts. However, the occurrence of coumarins, xanthones, flavonoids and styrilpyrones is well known for some species from different genera of Polygalaceae family.2 Those natural phenolic and/or polyphenolic substances may provide health benefits preventing different types of disease as cardiovascular, diabetes and obesity.3 In this context, we keep the search for new sources of natural substances which may show high antioxidant effects. For this work, we aim to evaluate total phenolics and total flavonoid content, 2,2-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging and ferric reducing power ability method of hydroethanolic crude extract, hexanes soluble, ethyl acetate soluble and aqueous fractions obtained from leaves of D. laurifolia. The studied material was collected in the campus of Federal University of Juiz de Fora, UFJF (MG, Brazil), in 26 Feb. 2015 (voucher: Pastore & Mota 5104 (CTBS, CEN, HUEFS)). The leaves were dried in oven at 40 oC and ground to a powder in a mechanical blender. The crude extract (CE) was prepared by exhaustive maceration at room temperature using 406,85 g of dried leaf powder in ethanol 96%. The extract was filtered, concentrated under reduced pressure at 40 oC and dried to obtain 59,68 g of the crude extract. 33,85 g of CE were used for liquid-liquid separation to produce 9,22 g of hexanes soluble fraction, 2,65 g of ethyl acetate soluble fraction and 19,93 g of the aqueous fraction. The crude extract and all fractions were evaluated to their total phenolics and total flavonoid content, DPPH radical scavenging and ferric reducing power ability.4 The best results were found for ethyl acetate soluble fraction: total phenolic content (256,07 mg gallic acid equivalents/g), total flavonoid content (45,23 mg quercetin equivalents/g), ferric reducing power ability (610,51 mg ascorbic acid equivalents/g), DPPH radical scavenging (EC50: 12,80 g/mL). The results showed that leaves of D. laurifolia are an important source of natural phenolic substances with antioxidant action. Effort has been made to identify those substances responsible for antioxidant effects.
