Polyprenylated Benzophenones from Clusia burlemarxii
Introduction
Clusia is an important genus belonging to Clusiaceae. The Clusiaceae family is known for producing
large amounts of benzophenone derivatives with several isoprene residues on their structures, which are
responsible for the observed complexity and structural variety in this class of substances, and contribute
to their biological activities, as well as propolone A also have antibacterial effectson Grampositive/negative
bacteria or yeasts. The plant was harvested in Campo Rupestre area (rocky fields) near
Mucugê in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia state, northeastern of Brazil. In this work, we report the
isolation of two polyisoprened benzophenones, propolones A (1) and D (2) from the hexane extract of the
C. burlemarxii trunk.
Experimental
Dried powdered trunk (10.0 kg) was extracted with hexane. The extract (121.2 g) was fractionated with
hexane and hexane/AcOEt mixtures in a silica gel column. The fraction 13 was subjected to CC using
Hex/AcOEt to give 30 subfractions. While the subfraction G13-8 was subjected to semipreparative HPLC
using a C18 column (250 x 5 mm, 5µm) and an isocratic system MeOH:H2O (90:10), flow rate at 6mL/min, to give 1 (20,0 mg, tr= 13.0 min) and 2 (10 mg, tr = 15.0 min).
Results e discussion
The struture of the compounds was established after carefully analysis of 1H, 13C and 2D NMR data. The
benzophenones isolated in this study have a bicyclo [3.3.1] nonane-2,4,9-trione system. The substances
were isolated for the first time from Cuban Propolis resins3,4.
Conclusion
The phytochemical study of hexane extract from C. burlemarxii led to the isolation of polyprenylated
benzophenones thus contributing to knowledge of chemodiversity from species of Chapada Diamantina.
