Bonsucro’s ClimateCane Tracker: the best science-based tool for setting emissions reduction targets in sugarcane production

Bonsucro is the leading sustainability platform in the sugarcane sector and supports sector-wide efforts to reduce emissions – in this context, it has designed a unique tool called “ClimateCane Tracker”. The tool allows sugarcane mills and farms and their supply chain to set a clear reduction target and pathway to reduce GHG emissions in sugarcane farming. This target-setting tool covers emissions up to the farm gate, including land-management emissions, land-use change emissions, and removals (carbon sequestration in soils). The tool generates targets for absolute and intensity reductions and aims at becoming instrumental in the wider sector’s efforts to reduce emissions globally. In this article we approach how the tool has been designed, its model and results so far.
