Enhancing Submission Rates Through Student Engagement using the DRED Approach

Introduction Increasing submission rates is a persistent challenge for academic teams. Our approach centers on engaging students in meaningful conversations to identify their concerns and interests regarding assignments. This engagement fosters a collaborative environment, leading to improved submission rates and a more enriching academic experience. Methodology Through active dialogue, we encouraged students to voice their fears and uncertainties about assignments. We identified common barriers, such as confusion over referencing and the critical importance of introductions. By listening to their concerns, we developed a strategic response to alleviate these anxieties. We emphasized the significance of understanding the definitions of keywords and topics. Researching these definitions not only enriches students' understanding of the subject matter but also reinforces the importance of accurate citation and referencing. By giving credit to original authors, students learn to acknowledge the contributions of others, which is a fundamental aspect of academic integrity. The DRED Approach To further support our students, we introduced the DRED acronym as a practical tool for enhancing their assignments: - Define: Provide formal definitions of key concepts. - Reference: Emphasize the importance of citing sources correctly. - Example: Use relevant examples to demonstrate understanding. - Discuss: Engage in coherent discussions to articulate ideas effectively. This approach encourages students to engage critically with the material, enhancing their information literacy and research skills. By embedding accurate research methods and techniques into their work, students cultivate essential skills such as critical thinking, citation mastery, and effective communication. Results The implementation of the DRED approach led to a remarkable 100% submission rate in my modules this term. Students reported increased confidence in their research skills and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. They embraced the DRED method, which not only improved their submissions but also enriched their learning experience. Support for Marking Tutors and Examiners The DRED approach also aids marking tutors and examiners by providing a clearer framework for evaluating students' knowledge building, research skills, understanding, thinking skills, and information delivery. By adhering to the DRED guidelines, students demonstrate their ability to synthesize information and convey their ideas effectively, making the assessment process more straightforward and aligned with learning objectives. Conclusion Engaging students and addressing their concerns has proven to be an effective strategy for enhancing submission rates. By fostering an environment that encourages self-development and collaboration, we ensure our own growth as educators and improve academic outcomes for our students.
