The international seminar Tran-In-Corporados: Building Networks for International Dance Research is an accomplishment of the Laboratório de Crítica (LabCrítica), Department of Arts of the Body of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, funded by the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research in the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) and in partnership with the Panorama Festival and Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR). The first edition of the event, which took place at MAR, on November 10 and 11, 2017, brought together recent researches on dance and its interfaces for reflection about translation, remixing and dissemination processes and politics. It was attended by more than 100 researchers, artists, and cultural agents from Brazil, Germany, Colombia, United States, France, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom and Uruguay, composing a broad programming of conferences, panels, debates, book releases and a showcase of artistic experiments at MAR and other spaces around the Rio de Janeiro port area.

Trans-In-Corporados arises as a way of giving visibility to the new Graduate Program in Dance of UFRJ (PPGDan – UFRJ) (currently in implementation phase) and to insert the program in the conversations other similar programs and research networks are currently having both in Brazil and abroad. Besides to professors from PPGDan-UFRJ, the scientific committee of the event is composed by invited artist-researchers from several universities in Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom.

In 2017, a LabCrítica and MAR partership co-curated the artistic experiment section. The Graduate Program in Dance of Federal University of Bahia and the Centro Coreográfico do Rio de Janeiro were collaborators of the event.

Provocations

In which ways dance and other artistic practices have reinvented being-with? What is the role of movements and corpographies in the interaction with the other? How can we build strategies of hospitality and mobility and networks between artists, institutions, languages and other agents for the internationalization of solidarity? Why would it be important to think about internationalization and which kinds of internationalization are we interested in? Which ethical-political questions emerge as challenges for the dissemination of our productions in the current economic-political context, in Brazil and around the world? Which critical diagnoses can we propose about the insertion/reception of Brazilian dance research in the United States, Europe, Latin America and the Global South? How do we performatize translations beyond the phonologocentric regime? What does resist, what gets lost and what recombines in translation processes? How do the notions of iterability, reenactment, intermidiality, incorporation, and excorporation expand dance research? Which poetics, epistemologies, systems, and ways of thinking of translation, remixing, and dissemination reconfigure the contemporary dance scene and its interfaces? Which platforms and technologies are involved in this debate? How solidarity and border porosity are or can be addressed in processes and choreographic discussions? What effects do they produce? How can dance studies rethink international mobility, migratory flows, heterotopias, utopias, inheritances, and diasporas?

Departing from these thematic provocations, scholars and artists from all areas, in Brazil and abroad submitted proposals (papers, panels and artistic experiments) in dialogue with three debate axes (UFRJ’s lines of dance research): 1 – Performance and Performativities of Dance; 2 – Poetics and Interfaces of Dance; And 3 – Dance-Education.
