Resumo

Stryphnodendron adstringens, known as Barbatimão, is a plant found in the Brazilian Cerrado. Barbatimão displays several medicinal properties related to the high content of phenolic compounds obtained mainly from its bark through extraction processes. This work aimed to apply ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) to obtain extracts from Barbatimão bark. Extractions were performed in an ultrasound device equipped with a titanium probe (Ø13 mm) using hydroethanolic solution (50% w/w) as the solvent. Wave amplitude (0, 20, 30, and 40%), solvent-to-sample mass ratio (S/F) (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25), and process time (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 min) were evaluated under univariate analysis. The extraction yield was monitored to evaluate the UAE. The amplitude of 30% presented the higher extraction yield (22.20 ± 0.18%), while the process without the ultrasound application reported yield equal to 7.58 ± 0.04%. The S/F equal to 20 showed to be the most appropriate, presenting a yield of 29.67 ± 1.17%. Finally, 8 minutes of extraction was enough to reach a higher yield (43.39 ± 1.37%). Therefore, the results from this work revealed that the UAE performed up to 30% amplitude (19-9 W) increased the yield, and higher than 30%, did not significantly affect it. S/F showed similar behaviour, up to 20, the yield was increased and higher than 20, there was no significant difference, showing that the excess of solvent did not affect the yield. Extraction time was shorter compared to other extraction techniques since 8 min was sufficient to achieve the maximum yield. The results presented by this work show the UAE as an emerging and technically feasible technique to obtain Barbatimão bark extract.
