Abstract

I will report on the atomic and magnetic disorder in A$_2$B$_2$O$_7$ compounds. We will characterize the atomic structure and its effect on the bulk magnetic properties down to 50mK, looking for exotic ground states, especially new spin liquids. Using neutron and X-ray diffraction techniques we have determined the extent of the atomic and magnetic disorder. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering results will also be presented as a preliminary measure of the spin dynamics. Initial results in this project were reported in J. G. A. Ramon, et al., Phys. Rev. B 99, 214442 (2019), but this presentation will focus on new results from Ho$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. This work has been performed in collaboration with R. Freitas (USP) and his research group.
