The objective of this paper is to evaluate the spatial and temporal dynamic of the land use and land cover change in Curuá-Una basin, located in Southwest Pará, during two periods: 2004 to 2010 and 2010 to 2014. TerraClass land use and cover classes were spatialized and quantified in a 3 km cell grid per year, for four classes: agriculture, urban area, mosaic of occupation and secondary vegetation. The results showed that, in general, all classes area increased in the first period, but only pasture class increased in the second period. Pasture increased six fold from 2010 to 2014, and is mainly concentrated in Transamazônica (BR-230) and BR-163 roads and in Santarém region, but secondary vegetation reduced 3/5 times during the same period. The increase of the pasture and the reduction of secondary vegetation area suggests that an increasing of the erosive processes in the basin. The expansion of the pasture areas contributes to the increasing of the impact of the rainfall, the reduction of water infiltration and increasing of the surface runoff and the soil loss. The understanding of land use and land cover dynamic is crucial to formulate integrated public policies considering the agrarian developments and the environmental aspects in a sustainable perspective.
