The natural vegetation has an important contribution at the protection of water resources, legally supported by the Forest Code, which established the Permanent Preservation Areas (APP). The reservoirs of the Cantareira System, especially Jaguari-Jacarei, suffered severe water crisis in recent years, evidencing the importance of protecting their contribution area. This study aimed to classify automatically land cover in these regions of interest and assess conflict areas with the law in the APP, delimited by geoprocessing techniques. APP’s delimitation was based on the IBGE drainage network, a digital elevation model and orbital images of the surface. It was used the object-based supervised classification of RapidEye images (2013). The automatic classification obtained an accuracy above 92%. Building areas and exposed soil were the classes with greater confusion each other, as well as reforestation and tree vegetation classes. The results showed that around half of the preservation area presented conflicting land cover, not being covered by tree vegetation. Grass was the class with greater conflict inside the APPs, occupying more than 41% of the area. The reservoir’s APP had only 32.7% of non-conflicting class. Therefore, is evident the requirement for regulation of such preservation areas, mainly because it is an extremely important supply system for the population.
