In the past, the face-to-face courses format fulfilled the principal demand in education. However, with the use of internet for teaching purposes and the emergence of Digital Information and Communication Technologies, educational opportunities have been expanded, providing more tools for collaborative learning. The objective of this paper is to present the transformation of a teaching-learning approach experience from a face-to-face classroom to an online classroom in the Remote Sensing area. The process of achieving a complete online course with learning objectives, teaching strategies, hands-on activities and comprehensive assessment is complex and requires an interdisciplinary perspective. In order to reach this goal, the INTERA methodology has been used to organize the stages of development, standardization, analysis and evaluation of the course. Moodle, a free and open Learning Management System, has been used to organize the learning material, setup the activities and foster interaction between instructors and students. E-Learning material, specially well-organized tutorials and selected datasets, have been created to support the training. The main challenge was to plan a course that allows students to learn about image interpretation and processing, even in the distance mode. To make this possible, the course has been built on the following fundamental principles: interaction, autonomy, creativity, interdisciplinarity and problem-based learning. The presented approach, characterized by the thoroughness of the methodology and the relationship of guiding principles and solid educational foundations, can be replicated in other online courses, especially those involving image interpretation and processing techniques.
