Potential fragility interpolated with emergent fragility is one of the methodological processes to obtain environmental vulnerability. In this work, the analysis of potential fragility is characterized as the natural fragility from the interrelation of the physical elements: pedology, percentage slope and annual rainfall. The chosen area is the River Santana Hydrographic Basin - RSHB, one of the main tributaries of the Paranaíba River. RSHB is located totally in the city of Paranaíba / MS, being responsible for 100% of the water supply of the city, having the collection and treatment station in its low course and for years it has undergone an evolutionary process of degradation practically throughout its course. The pedological map was made through the compilation of an existing theme provided by EMBRAPA, the slope mapping was generated from the SRTM radar images. Finally, the rainfall calculation used the average annual rainfall factor collected in 5 stations and spatialized by means of the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) Interpolation procedure presented by Shepard (1968). The potential fragility according to Ross (1994) is represented by classes: very weak (1), weak (2), medium (3), strong (4) and very strong (5), the map was created through the interpolation of all data in the ArcGis 10.1 software. The analysis showed that most of them were classified with potential of medium fragility, and in their high course they were observed indices of strong and very strong fragility, showing the importance of the sustainable management in the nascent area of the basin.
