The remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) has been used by researchers in different areas because of its large storage capacity of geospatial data. The use of these techniques extends the range of analysis for various segments of the sciences as agriculture, hydrological, meteorological modeling and preview of inundation. The normalized difference water index-NDWI was used in this study to estimate humid areas in Nhecolândia region of the Pantanal wetlands (state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) with the aim of comparing potential inundation areas with rainfall data. This region is known for their features with regional names as baías (lakes freshwater) and salinas (lakes water high concentration of salt). Was used remote sensing (Landsat-5-TM) and subsidiary data of precipitation from meteorological station of INMET in a Nhumirim farm/EMBRAPA for data collection. The results showed that the comparing the NDWI index with rainfall was positive because with the rainfall data was possible to have a field control of real conditions on the amount of rain that had precipitated. They contribute for the analysis and serving also as a parameter in the choice of the images to be processed. The combined use of remote sensing techniques with the digital image processing associated with the index proved effective in the study a large area that have with a limited availability of specific data.
