Abstract: the radiation that leaves the earth surface to remote sensing satellites is modified by scattering and absorption effects of gases and particulates that compose the atmosphere and consequently the flux that reaches the sensor contains a loss or an addition of radiation by scattering or absorption. In order to reduce the interference of the atmosphere many companies and single researchers have made effort in order to develop models for correction of remote sensing acquired products. The aim of this work is to compare the efficiency of three different atmospheric models for TM-Landsat 5 and OLI-Landsat 8 Image correction, namely ATCOR model, DOS model and USGS solution. We evaluated the difference between the apparent reflectance and the surface reflectance resulted from the application of each of the three models on TM-Landsat 5 and OLI-Landsat 8 images. The models showed distinct results especially in the visible region of electromagnetic spectrum. It has been found that for the same target and the same atmospheric model the results for TM-Landsat 5 image may differ from the OLI-Landsat 8 image results. The ATCOR model seemed to overestimate the surface reflectance, especially in the TM-Landsat 5 image. The USGS solution showed good performance for both TM-Landsat 5 and OLI-Landsat 8 image and for all analyzed targets. The DOS model showed similar results to USGS solution for OLI-Landsat 8 image but also showed some inconsistencies for TM-Landsat 5 image.
