Abstract

The paper proposes a systematic of typological categories for research that takes the foreign news media outlets that operate in Brazilian territory or having the Brazilian public as a target as their object of research. Based on four factors – ownership, editorial autonomy, newsroom staff and origin of the content – three aprioristic typologies are constructed: international broadcasting services for Brazil (BBC News Brasil, Deutsche Welle Brasil, Voice of America); Brazilian editions of foreign outlets (The Intercept Brasil, Clarín em Portuguese, ESPN Brasil); and franchises of foreign publications in Brazil (such as Forbes Brasil, Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil and Reader's Digest Selections). A fourth typology, which does not refer to media outlets, but to news agencies, is also contemplated, to avoid omissions and heterogeneous classifications.
