Abstract

Scrutinizing the intricate game of relations between the professional class and the academic world of journalism is the purpose of this article, which makes an exercise of historical-sociological reconstruction of the events that occurred in Brazil between the years 1969 and 2013. Attention is drawn, on the one hand, to the pressures and resistance on the part of the media business community and even renowned journalists regarding the mandatory nature of a diploma defended by the unions; and, on the other hand, for the disputes and claims, within the community of professors and researchers in the area, for the emancipation of journalism education in relation to communication. These are some of the challenges and paradoxes explored throughout this analysis.
