Abstract

To explore the effects of ingested plant metabolites on insects, we investigated larval development and immunity of a generalist insect (Vanessa cardui). Our findings suggested that V. cardui have adapted to tolerate potentially toxic iridoid glycosides occurring in Plantago lanceolata. Conversely, this generalist insect was not able to cope with potentially detrimental furanoheliangolide-type sesquiterpene lactones occurring in Tithonia diversifolia.
