Abstract

The state of Mato Grosso do Sul (SMS), is devoid of climatological studies, mainly on rainfall regime characterization and producers’ meteorological systems and rain inhibitors. This study analyzed the fire foci occurrence detected in different SMS biomes and related them to the rainfall variability from 2000 to 2015. Fire foci and rainfall were obtained on an annual scale, from 15 municipalities. Pantanal accounted for 240,381 fire foci, followed by Cerrado, with 28,752, and Mata Atlântica, with 11,193. The mean annual rainfall at Cerrado (1416 ± 260 mm) and Mata Atlântica (1411 ± 347 mm), as Pantanal had 1207 ± 240 mm. Results showed the influence of the variability of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation and its respective stages on the fire foci dynamics. The fire foci evaluation over biomes impacts public health policies, especially regarding agricultural planning, industry, tourism, and civil defense.
