Transfer of canola calibrations from FOSS NIRSystems 6500 to Bruker Matrix-I

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) has been integral in the evaluation of oilseed crops at the Canadian Grain Commission for nearly twenty-five years. The instrument of choice over the years has been a dispersive NIR instrument, the FOSS NIRSystems 6500 (NIRS6500), but with changes in new instrumentation it is incumbent to be prepared to take advantage of the large library of existing spectral data from the NIRS6500 and transfer it to different platforms, in this case to the Bruker FT-NIR Matrix-I (Matrix), with the minimal amount of time and work.
Different calibration transfer methods from the NIRS6500 to Matrix were examined for analysis of canola. The methods examined included a direct transfer of a large library of spectra from the NIRS6500 with the option of including a small spectral data set from the Matrix. The constituents analyzed were oil, protein, glucosinolates, oleic acid, linolenic acid and iodine values. The evaluation of the transfer of calibrations were accomplished by using standard error of prediction (SEP), coefficient of determination (R2), slope and bias tested against an independent set of samples with a comparison to the original NIRS6500 results.
Results indicate that transferring of calibrations to the Matrix was successful with similar SEP statistic results to that of the original NIRS6500 for oil, protein, glucosinolates, oleic acid, linolenic acid and iodine values of 0.44%, 0.37%, 2.0 mole/g, 0.68%, 0.56% and 0.55 units, respectively.
