Abstract

The internationalization of higher education (IHE) has been showing increasingly higher numbers of academic mobility. Impressive levels of growth can be found at UNESCO reports (2018), OECD surveys (2018) and the Institute of International Education (IIE) Atlas of Global Mobility data (2018).
International academic mobility and knowledge production are growing together. Despite this, the full Knowledge Management Cycle (KMC) (figure-1-see file) is not implemented in most Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Sharing and disseminating knowledge are defective due to the absence of institutional mechanisms to do that.
Directors of International Relations Offices of Brazilian HEIs interviewed during the FAUBAI Annual Conference (2018) state that the institutions investigated do not have any institutional policy to disseminate the results of international experiences. Despite investments in mobility, no formal (and even informal) mechanisms to capturing, systematizing or distributing the results were detected. Internationalization should be an integrated process between international, intercultural aspects and HEI’s purposes, and this must be the basis of the knowledge produced.
The IHE’s challenge is to promote opportunities for the academic community to share their experiences and benefits to the society. Models, methods, techniques, and tools are the typical path to face challenges and carry out internationalization activities dissemination. The purpose of this exploratory and descriptive research is to identify and propose Knowledge Management (KM) techniques and tools for mobility results dissemination. This research considers that the tools are the technical support that allows the implementation of the techniques.
As we’ve identified in several previous HEI’s consulting services we’ve done, this policy could include the development of blogs; microblogs; videocasts; podcasts; mashups; social networks; mental maps; classifiers; Content Management System (CMS); videoconferences, Communities of Practice (CoP) and repositories for best practices and lessons learned (from errors). There are lots of Information Technology (free) tools to build this knowledge support and assess the mobility outcomes.
The KM techniques and tools that we will introduce should apply to Internationalization and, they will serve as quality and excellence improvement possibilities for HEIs in the knowledge society.
