Platform Integration and Computational Fluid Dynamics to Confront Urban Torrents

Resumo

The insufficient infrastructure in urban areas and the loss of soil permeability causes, under heavy rain conditions, the occurrence of dangerous flash floods that threaten people's safety and damage property. This is a common situation in Paraguay's capital city, Asunción, and its metropolitan area. To face the situation, a digital twin of the urban region is elaborated using the software programs QGIS and SAGA. Then, it is possible to execute an unsteady flow simulation in HEC-RAS to predict the water velocity and depth over the terrain.

We take, for this case, the example of Lambaré, a municipality of Paraguay's Central Department, that suffers intense flash floods whenever a heavy rainfall occurs. The results of water velocity and depth are used to generate dynamical hazard maps with focus on frequently reported critical points.
