Chagas disease is a chronic illness caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, generally leads to cardiac and digestive degeneration during the chronic phase (WHO, 2018). This study aims to evaluate the effects of melatonin and amiodarone supplementation in pregnant Wistar rats infected with T. cruzi. Animals were infected with the Y strain of T. cruzi, allowed to mate and treated with 5 mg/Kg/day of melatonin combined with 30 mg/Kg/day of amiodarone for 18 days. After this period, animals were euthanized and the placentas, fetuses, hearts, spleens, peritoneal exudate collected for immune response evaluation and parasite burden quantification (real-time PCR). The combination of amiodarone and melatonin triggered a decreased in parasite burden only in placentas (73%), whereas CD45RA cells decreased and NO levels kept unaltered. Melatonin and amiodarona can be used as a promissory co-adjuvant treatment for Chagas disease in pregnant subjects no matter animal models or humans.
