Abstract

NCEP is implementing first version of the Finite Volume Cubed Sphere (FV3) dynamic core based Global Forecast System (FV3GFS V1.0) into operations in February 2019, replacing the spectral model based operational GFS - used for more than 38 years. Development of FV3GFS was made possible with support from NOAA's Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS) Program. NOAA's Unified Forecast System (UFS) is being built as a community model, with significant inputs from several working groups. Improving computational efficiency and adopting UFS to novel and emerging HPC architectures is another important area that requires special attention. This talk describes research transitioning to operations the strategy for enabling a robust of advanced community research into operations.
