Software Defined Network (SDN) is an emerging technology that will make possible benefits that before were impossible with traditional networks. Easier network management, global view and reduced expenses are some of these benefits due to the control plane and data plane are separated. The centralized logic control offers the ability to save energy by strategic activation of devices. In this paper we propose an approach that seeks to minimize the global energy consumption of the network by putting inactive devices such as chassis and/or line-cards to sleep as well as limiting the use of links by the traffic sessions. For this, we develop a binary linear programming model for the SDN routing problem in order to obtain the minimal energy consumption, subject to meet the static traffic demands. The experimental results, on two real network topologies with different real traffic loads, indicate that the proposed model is promissory, saving 42% of global energy consumption and gets better
