How does football could help to build a compassionate community?

A public health approach to the end of life care seeks the promotion of the awareness about the challenges of the end of life, reorienting the attitudes and behaviours of society when facing the end of life subjects like death, dying, loss. The WHO defends the improving of access to palliative care and the integration beyond the 3 levels of attention but with the focus on primary care and communities. To reach this point we need to raise awareness of the community about the subject of end of life care. Searching to reach that the Project “Estar ao Seu Lado- Cuidados Paliativos na Atenção Primária” in partnership with the professional football team SC São Paulo have decided to use football as a tool to share the message of palliative care and the better care in the community. Methods: This Project will act in three fronts: the first step was started during the Championship of the Fourth Division. During those 3 games we talked directly with people about that subject and the reactions were of surprise, ignorance of the theme and opening to discuss. The second front is celebrate the World Hospice´s Day inside the statium of SC São Paulo on a eekend of activities to discuss palliative care concepts with the community divided in games for children and a Cup of Football. The third step is developing a program to involve different people to came and participate seeking to improve the possibility to return to their communities and offer palliative care. Discussion: The community has a main role in the future of end of life and palliative care. To become posible its performance is necessary to rise the awareness about the subject of end of life. The football can be a good tool to help to reach that point.
