This work applied a metabolomics approach to investigate the Penicillium italicum-Citrus sinensis interaction. Five diketopiperazine alkaloids were identified in P. italicum during host-pathogen interaction. Biological assays demonstrated that alkaloid brevianamide F showed antifungal activity against citrus endophytic fungi and phytotoxicity to the host. The results provide insights into the interaction between P. italicum, citrus hosts, and the respective community of endophytic fungi.
