Abstract

Aristolochia elegans seeds are used to treat malaria.
Extracts of seeds were evaluated against chloroquine resistant Plasmodium falciparum strain W2, and they were inactive when tested up to 50 μg/mL.
Aristolochic acid I was the major compound in A. elegans seeds.
This nitrophenanthrene derivative was quantified in the extracts by 1H-qNMR.
