Currently, polymeric films formed by starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) have attracted the interest of the scientific community due to their various possibilities of application, added to their biodegradability and low production costs. The incorporation of flavonoids in these films makes them even more attractive since these compounds can be applied as sensors for metal ions.1 In this regard, this work aimed to develop and characterize polymeric films formed by starch and PVA incorporated with the flavonoids rutin (RU) and quercetin (QU) to apply them for the identification of copper. The effects of the incorporation of flavonoid on the film’s properties were evaluated through studies of flavonoid release, solubility, FTIR, and X-ray analyses. The presence of flavonoids in the film did not change its solubility or crystallinity, however promoted the displacements of bands in the FTIR spectra, especially those related with oxygenated groups which could be involved in hydrogen bonds. The RU incorporated in the film was released when the film was immersed into aqueous solution, while the same effect was not observed for QU, suggesting that the glycosidic group in the structure of the RU caused steric hindrance that avoid a more efficient cross-linked. The films were applied as sensor for copper detection in aqueous matrices, with detection and quantification limits equal to 0.065 and 0.22 mg/L, respectively, with visual detection possible.
