Postpartum family planning is generally acknowledged as an important component of the reproductive health agenda and a necessity in all programs and policies geared towards the realization of safe motherhood. It is also a window of opportunity for addressing widespread unmet needs in family planning and for reducing the risks of maternal mortality and closely spaced pregnancies. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of maternity services on the adoption of postpartum family planning (PPFP) in the subsequent months followina recent childbirth. Data for this analysis were extracted from the 2015-16 Indian Demographic and Health Surveys and included only currently married young women aged 15-29 who had given last live birth in the five years preceding the survey. Discrete-time complementary log-log models were employed to examine the effect of maternity services utilization on PPFP practice. By 12 months postpartum period, nearly 37% of women adopted a modern FP method and 8% of women adopted a traditional FP method. Multivariate results revealed that ANC visits, place of delivery and PNC check-up emerged as strongly significant correlates of PPFP practice, even after controlling for socio-economic and demographic correlates. The study findings drive effective programmatic implications to promote the integration of FP with maternity services can enhance the likelihood of early adoption of modern contraception during the postpartum period in India.
